The Psychology Behind Wonder Woman’s 1941 Debut

Wonder Woman didn’t start as a mainstream superhero. She arrived quietly in All Star Comics no. 8, landing in newsstands in December 1941. The character received fuller treatment just weeks later in Sensation Comics no. 1 (January 1942), followed by her own series, Wonder Woman no. 1, in June.

The creative force behind the Amazon princess was psychologist William Moulton Marston. He wrote under the pseudonym Charles Moulton. Artist Harry G. Peter handled the visuals. Marston’s academic background wasn’t just flavor text. It shaped the character’s core mechanics and moral framework from the very first panel.
