E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co. started as a small operation near Wilmington, Delaware. The year was 1802. A French immigrant named Éleuthère Irénée du Pont de Nemours founded it. His father was Pierre-Samuel du Pont de Nemours, an economist of some renown.
